If you have ever been in (close) contact with a man’s beard, you know beards can be hard and scratchy. Coarse beard hair can be softened with the right kind of attention, so I created this simple DIY method to soften it up.
Softening Beard Hair Naturally
Beards are made from a different hair that what is on our heads and the rest of our bodies. Some scientists think it’s more harsh so it protects the face from the elements. This makes sense as our forefathers didn’t have the luxuries that we do, like heated homes and vehicles. Today we aren’t exposed to the elements as much, so such protection isn’t as necessary. Men still sport beards, but now they can be softened without worrying about losing protection.
One way to soften the hairs is to use a beard oil. The oil penetrates the hair shaft, making it softer and nicer to touch. The oil also makes it easier to trim and reduces static – a nice bonus in the winter.
Homemade Beard Oil Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons argan oil (find it here)
- 2 tablespoons grapeseed oil (find it here)
- a few drops essential oil, optional (find pure essential oils here)*
- 2 tablespoons fractionated coconut oil (find it here)
- 2 tablespoons safflower or sunflower oil (or another light oil of your choice)
Directions
Combine all ingredients in a small bottle or glass dropper bottle. Cap and shake to mix. To use, pour a small amount into your hand and rub palms together. Stroke your hands through the beard, through all of the strands. It will feel greasy at first, but will soak in quickly.
Essential Oils for Beards*
You can add a few drops of essential oils if you wish. Some good choices would be rosemary, lavender, or bay rum. (Find these pure essential oils here.)
Additional Notes
I used fractionated coconut oil in this recipe because it remains liquid all the time, rather than most coconut oils that harden below 76°F.
The other oils in this recipe can be switched out for different oils, but these are found to have the best effects on this type of hair.
Have you (or a man in your life) ever tried a beard oil? If so, what did you think?
