A DIY hair oil treatment is very simple to make yourself. You can use castor, coconut, or argan oil, and essential oils to condition and treat hair at home.
My sister has yak hair. Her description, not mine, but very apt! It gets wild and frizzy and needs some taming down. She asked me to come up with a conditioning hair oil and this is what I made.
Best Oils for DIY Hair Oil Treatment
A lot of oils that are used in skincare can also be used on hair. Some are better than others. Here’s a list of those that can be used to condition hair:
Fractionated Coconut Oil for Hair
Castor Oil for Hair
Rich in omega 6 and 9 fatty acids that help to maintain hair shine. Castor oil is also antibacterial and antimicrobial, which could aid in scalp circulation, helping hair to grow. Find Castor oil here.
Argan Oil for Hair
One of the best oils for hair, helping it to be shiny and smooth. Find Argan oil here.
Jojoba Oil for Hair
Contains natural waxy compounds that are not heavy and won’t weigh hair down. Jojoba oil is more water-soluble than most other oils. Find Jojoba oil here.
There are other oils that can be used, such as olive oil or sweet almond oil, but these oils will have the most benefits for your hair.
Essential Oils for Hair
Essential oils, mainly derived from plant material, can add to your hair oil by containing compounds that are good for your hair.
- Cedarwood oil promotes hair growth and can help to balance oil production
- Roman chamomile oil adds shine and softens hair
- Lavender oil can help to regenerate new skin cells, therefore helping hair to grow
- Peppermint oil can help to stimulate the scalp
- Rosemary oil is good for all aspects of hair can from growth to shine
- Lemongrass oil can help in reducing dandruff
- Rose oil contains compounds that can help soften your hair.
And some oil infusions can help with hair growth and overall health of the hair. Make these like most other oil infusions.
You can use the oil infusions as the base and add essential oils to complete your hair oil. Let’s take a look at how to make them.
DIY Hair Oil Treatment
- 1/4 cup base oil (see above)
- 10-15 drops essential oil (see above)
- small jar
Mix the oils in the jar and cap tightly. Store in a dark, cool spot. To use your hair oil, wash and towel dry your hair. Place a teaspoon or so of the oil in your palm and rub between both hands. Starting at the ends of your hair, massage in. Work your way almost to your scalp. Avoid the scalp area as the oils could make your hair feel and look greasy.
While this oil blend is meant as a leave-in conditioning hair oil treatment, there are other ways that you can use it.
Hot Oil Treatment
One is to make a hot oil treatment. Heat a few teaspoons of the oil in a small bowl. Apply to your hair and wrap a damp towel around it. Leave the towel on for a half-hour or so and rinse out. Dry and style as you normally would.
Another way to use your hair oil is to use it as a conditioner in the shower. Wash your hair as you normally would, then apply the oil instead of a conditioner. Leave in while you wash your body, then rinse out the excess. Be careful, as your shower can get VERY slippery from the oil. I speak from experience!
Split End Treatment
You can use your hair oil and split end treatment. Apply a small amount of the hair oil to the very ends of your hair, wrap in a towel and leave overnight. Rinse or wash out in the morning. Doing this even twice a week can improve the appearance of your hair.
